Tanner Bowersox: Bowersox Exploration
Building Networks, Finding Mentors, Sourcing Data, Generating Prospects, Buying Leases, and Selling Deals. If you can’t wear all of those hats, you had better figure out how to wear them, or you had better find some complementary teammates to wear some of those hats for you, or you had better just hang your pretty little maps on the fridge next to your toddler’s stick figure drawings and go find something else to do. This talk is a short revamp of the old SIPES “How to Be an Independent Geologist” workshops, just in time to save the careers of all of the folks recently laid off from major companies. The talk is intended to serve two audiences: those fresh to the field of being an independent geologist looking to figure out how to put oil and gas drilling deals together, and those more seasoned independent geos who have not utilized the wonders of modern technology to get their deals in front of as many potential buyers as possible. Attendees will leave with a framework of what it takes to go from square one to drilling their own prospects someday, learn about software and data procurement options and their associated costs, hear some common deal structures, learn how to mitigate risk when starting from zero, learn about common pitfalls to avoid, and walk away with new ideas on how to cast the widest net possible in funding deals using more modern approaches than calling one person at a time.
Tanner Bowersox is the current Chairman and Treasurer of SIPES Houston. He is one of the youngest members of SIPES Houston and is the President of Bowersox Exploration, LLC, a one-man prospect shop that puts together conventional, vertical drilling deals and participates in outside working interest drilling deals in Texas, Mississippi, and Arkansas. Growing up in small-town Pennsylvania with absolutely zero oil & gas background and moving to Texas after graduating with a geology degree from Whitman College, he began working at a mid-size oil company in 2014 just before the crash, getting axed from said job in 2016 and becoming an independent by means of necessity. Through great mentors and being willing to get beaten up by the learning process, working a side job outside of geology, and keeping expenses low, Tanner was able to make being an independent geologist a reality for himself. This talk should help you to know how to do the same, regardless of how well networked, financed, or knowledgeable you currently are.
