The Paluxy Oil Trend of Southwest Texas

The Paluxy (Lower Cretaceous) of SW Texas is an emerging shallow oil resource play covering approximately 1500 sections in Edwards and Val Verde Counties, Texas. The depths range between 220′ and 600′ (dd). There have been +60,000 acres leased or optioned by a handful of small independents in the last four years. PNP Operating Company has been engaged in the play for six years, has drilled 32 new wells and currently operates five (5) steam injection wells. There are multiple sand and dolomite oil reservoirs within the Paluxy series, with OOIP as high as 1850 barrels per acre foot. The oil is generally viscous, ranging from 300 to 1100 cP. The reservoirs are under pressured and the oil contains no solution gas, making EOR necessary. Presently, operators are using a variety of EOR methods to include water flood, conventional steam flood, downhole generated steam injection, fire flood and SWEPT technology.
The occurrence of oil productive Paluxy reservoirs is widespread within the play, however there are geological challenges and well as EOR challenges. Presently the Paluxy is a hotbed for the application of new technologies.
Unlike the deeper Paleozoic plays of the Permian, the Paluxy trend acreage is largely unleased and acreage prices have not yet risen to typical resource play bonus and royalty terms. The combination of low entry costs, low drilling costs and high reserves make the Paluxy an attractive play for an era of diminished opportunity for independents.
